Black Hills, SD

This is a really interesting area. It covers Mount Rushmore, the Mammoth Hot Springs Site and Crazy Horse Memorial.

The site of a sinkhole, it became a point where the mammoth found water. Unfortunately, after the mammoth drank it was unable to climb the slippery slope to high ground and so it perished in the waters of the sinkhole.

The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD was discovered in 1974 during routine excavation for a housing development.

The property owners, sensing an important historical discovery allowed investigation of the site to begin and curtailed the development of the property.

Dating is 26,000 years ago when the mammoth, an ancestor of the elephant roamed this land. The site contains the remains of possibly 100 Columbian and woolly mamouths.
